I have a 27' Cinema Display that I would like to connect to my Windows-based laptop. The computer has a VGA (female) port and a DisplayPort. Wacom tablet driver for tablet et mac 10.11.6. The Cinema Display has a hard-wired DVI (male) cable.
The Cinema Display works as expected when connected to both of my Mac Pro desktop computers but I no longer use those computers. When I connect the Cinema Display to the laptop, the monitor powers on (the indicator in the lower right hand corner of the monitor lights up) but there is no display. Additionally, the laptop recognizes that there is a secondary monitor and allows me to extend the display to that monitor. From my initial research, I may need to inst all Boot Camp drivers to get the display to work but I wanted to reach out to the community before doing that. Is that the best way to go or is there something else I should do? The problem is that your VGA/DVI adapter is still passing a VGA signal, which the DVI port on the display cannot accept, only a Digital signal.
If you look at your adapters DVI port, the one side probably looks like a ' plus ' sign, and only the vga signal is being passed through that junction. The DVI cable will plug in, but, no Digital signal present. He'll need something that ends in a female DVI connector in order to use it. The Monoprice adapter I linked to above will accomplish all of this in a single adapter. Yeah, those VGA/DVI adapters, they usually only work one way, unless you get one built to work the other way like TrippCableGuy said.
But if it's just a small little adapter that looks like it cost $10 or so, then it is intended to convert from DVI output to VGA input, not the other way around. They convert a DVI output from a computer to a VGA monitor. Depending on the outputs on the laptop, you will need to get a converter that converts to DVI from one of the digital outputs, such as DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, or HDMI.
