Change The Notification Dots In Outlook For Mac

Hi Lance, thank you for the reply. No, I don't mean the icon bounce -- though I do have that checked, now that the icon indicator doesn't work.

Dec 31, 2014  Outlook for Mac for Office 365 has several new email notification options available to configure so you can customize how you are notified of new emails you may have missed. This blog post will explain these email notification options.

Previously, a small envelope icon would appear over the Outlook dock icon when a new message arrived. (It was overlaid on the app icon, the way a badge is). I used this visual indicator all the time, so I know I'm not having icon-hallucinations.:) But, with the latest update, that doesn't happen anymore. Hoping to figure this out -- it was a very useful indicator. Interesting, just found this -- a discussion on Superuser about how to keep the new mail envelope badge from appearing on Outlook 2016. The solution (to prevent it from appearing) was to remove/rename an icon called 'new mail badge.png' in the app's Resources -- this was the envelope icon that would appear over the app icon in the dock. I've seen that icon-file before, in my Outlook app package/Resources.

But I just looked, and now it's not there. As I said, this has been working. I don't know if the latest update removed that feature, but I really hope not. Thanks for the follow-up!

Sadly, I've had no replies at all. I thought maybe since it was a fast-track build, one of the devs might have some insight. What I do know, is that the little envelope icon that used to be in the app's Resources, isn't there anymore. Dunno if that's a weird glitch, or it was removed, or if it's related. I really appreciate your time and keeping this on your radar. I guess it's still considered open, then -- and if I hear anything on the Insider question, I will definitely post back.

Thanks for the posts. I can confirm the envelope badge has been removed from versions 15.33 and higher. We removed the envelope badge for two reasons: 1) Show unread count only. We were conveying two different pieces of information in one place: unseen message(s) with the envelope, and unread count across inboxes with the red badge.

The red badge count is common for apps on Mac and iOS, and we decided to keep this badge and remove the envelope, which is more of a Windows Outlook convention. Windows Outlook also shows badges on the taskbar like the alert exclamation point which Outlook for Mac doesn't show. 2) Appearance. The envelope badge itself was overlapping the “O” in the Outlook icon to create the appearance of a lock icon, prompting feedback around whether Outlook was in some sort of locked state. It also didn’t help that the icon for Outlook 2016 has an envelope within it, too, so showing the envelope for unseen messages created a double envelope appearance. Hi Jeff, I appreciate the clarification.

After weeks with no response from Microsoft, it's good of you to provide the explanation. Still, it is disappointing, and frustrating. I'm on a Macbook Pro Retina, with my dock on the side, and a number of apps in the dock. I've screencapped a portion of the dock to illustrate that for users like me, that tiny red badge is useless. And it's permanently there, unless you live by inbox zero, which many of us don't. An indication of new mail, however, was easily noticed when it appeared. I can say that even at this small size, I never once thought Outlook was in a 'locked state' -- and at larger sizes, it should be even more discernible.

Obviously I'm just an outside user, but I can't imagine that more people were confused by the 'new message' envelope than found it useful. Further, this was not mentioned in any release notes. Or if it was, I couldn't find them. If you wonder why people hesitate to upgrade apps, it's because of things like this -- features removed with no warning and no explanation, leaving us to wonder if it's a bug, try removing and reinstalling, looking in the app package, and going through lots of hassle trying to figure it out. To me, this is a significant feature removal. You have a full-featured professional email app, that no longer indicates new email.

(Except a badge count.) Again, the explanation is appreciated. But the end result is not.
